Rwanda have moved to second place in Group H after their convincing 5-0 win over Les Dodos of Mauritius in their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in front of a capacity 35,000 crowd in Kigali, Rwanda.

Two from striker Ernest SUGIRA and a goal each from Dominique Savio NSHUTI, Fitina OMBORENGA and Jean-Baptiste MUGIRANEZA earned Coach McKinstry’s side maximum points to keep them in the race for a place in Gabon 2017 AFCON finals.

Dominique Savio NSHUTI got things underway in the 11th minute with a good header following a cross from defender Fitina OMBORENGA.

Ernest SUGIRA then scored two goals within one minute of each other, both from assists by Abouba SIBOMANA - the first a volley just inside the box in the 30th minute, quickly followed by a second moments later when SUGIRA stepped round the Mauritian goalkeeper and finished into the now open net to put the Amavubi 3-0 up.

After the half time break, Rwanda moved to apply further pressure, creating a number of chances. Success came again in the 74th minute when Emery BAYISENGE played a masterful ball from deep inside the Rwanda half - crossing the ball from the left wing to Fitina OMBORENGA high on the right wing, allowing Fitina to strike past the defence and keeper to put Rwanda 4-0 up.

Substitute Jean-Baptiste MUGIRANEZA was unfortunate to have a goal disallowed in the 84th minute when he was harshly judged to have been off-side. Undaunted however, in the 90th minute MUGIRANEZA overcame 2 Mauritian defenders and their scrambling goalkeeper to give Rwanda a 5-0 victory.

Rwanda now have six points and occupy second place (on goal difference) in the qualification Group H.

The victory keeps alive Rwanda's hopes for qualification if they can finish as one of two second best teams overall.   Rwanda will next host Mozambique on June 3 in Kigali before facing Ghana on September 2.

Post-match interview with Coach McKinstry.

Speaking after the game Coach McKinstry said:

"The performance today comes much closer to what I expect from this Rwanda team. We have seen some excellent team and individual performances.. Sugira's second was excellent, and Emery Bayisenge's long range cross to allow Fitina to score was a fantastic moment of vision combined with technical ability"

"My satisfaction today however comes also with feeling of frustration given our narrow 1-0 loss to this same team just a few days ago. The difference today was that the player's properly implemented our game plan and were able to take advantages of the weaknesses we had identified in the Mauritian team. Our needless loss last week means that we have now left ourselves with considerable work to do"

"The fans were again today fantastic and we hope that they enjoyed seeing what this still young Rwandan team is capable of delivering. We look forward to their full support again in June when we face Mozambique at home in the next qualification game."
